Kiau Nuluh Village Makes History at the Foot of Mount Kinabalu: A Model for Modern Agriculture Driving Rural Economic Growth
KOTA BELUD (Sabah, Malaysia), 11 August 2025 – Kiau Nuluh Village, nestled at the foot of Mount Kinabalu, has made history by emerging as a leading model for modern agriculture in Sabah. The village’s successful chili fertigation project, spearheaded by the Dusun Tindal Identity Development Association with support from the SejaTi MADANI Programme, is transforming the local economy and setting new benchmarks for rural farming innovation.
Launched earlier this year with an allocation of RM50,000, the project has already recorded seven harvests, generating consistent income for the farming community, particularly single mothers and youth. By using fertigation technology, the farmers are able to manage crops more efficiently, reduce disease risks, increase yields, and position rural agriculture as a competitive and sustainable sector.
Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives, Datuk Ewon Benedick, who is also the State Assemblyman for Kadamaian, described the initiative as proof that innovation and government support can reshape rural economic landscapes.
“This project demonstrates that with technology, dedication, and collaboration, rural communities can achieve stable and sustainable income. I will continue to assist in securing additional allocations to expand the cultivated area and boost production capacity,” he said during his visit on Saturday.
He emphasised that Kiau Nuluh’s success should serve as a model for other villages across Sabah as part of a broader strategy to build a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable agricultural ecosystem.
Deputy Chairperson of the Association, Scholastica Lanting, who leads the project, expressed gratitude for Ewon’s personal visit and support despite his tight schedule.
“His presence inspires and motivates us to further expand this enterprise,” she said.
More than just a farming initiative, the chili fertigation project in Kiau Nuluh is fostering rural entrepreneurship, enhancing farmers’ technical skills, and strengthening community collaboration. Its success stands as a symbol of economic transformation in Sabah’s heartland through technology, innovation, and visionary leadership.
