PUTRAJAYA, Aug 29, 2025 – The United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (UPKO) has called on the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to launch an immediate investigation into a viral video that allegedly insulted Sabah’s indigenous communities and distorted the historical significance of the Batu Sumpah Keningau – a key symbol in the formation of Malaysia.

Carl Moosom, Political Secretary to the UPKO President, said the 1-minute 26-second video contained extreme derogatory remarks against the Kadazan, Dusun, Murut and Rungus (KDMR) ethnic groups, while spreading a dangerous narrative capable of fuelling ethnic hatred.

“UPKO demands that the MCMC trace the source and hold accountable those responsible for producing this video. Firm action must be taken against any individual or group attempting to incite racial division and undermine national harmony,” he said in an official statement.

Carl also urged MCMC to ensure the video is removed immediately from all social media platforms, including WhatsApp, TikTok, Facebook and Instagram, to prevent wider dissemination.

He stressed that UPKO would not compromise with any attempt to demean the dignity of the KDMR communities or to challenge Sabah’s historical identity.

“The Batu Sumpah Keningau is not merely a memorial stone. It represents solemn pledges made regarding the rights and autonomy of Sabah’s people, particularly in relation to religion, during the formation of Malaysia. It stands as a symbol of dignity and a political covenant that must not be distorted,” Carl said.

UPKO President’s Special Officer, Billy Joe Dominic, was also present to lodge an official report on the matter.

UPKO further warned that attempts to insult ethnic identity or manipulate historical facts are highly dangerous, threaten national unity, and must be met with strict enforcement by the authorities.
