KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21 – The Malaysia Franchise Expo 2025 (FEM 2025) opened on Thursday at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), targeting RM120 million (US$25.6 million) in transactions – a 20 percent increase from last year – underscoring the sector’s growing role as a driver of Malaysia’s economic growth.

The eighth edition of the high-profile expo, organised by the Malaysian Retail Chain Association (MRCA), features more than 400 exhibitors from Malaysia and abroad across sectors including food and beverage, education, healthcare, retail, and technology. Organisers expect over 18,000 visitors, including investors, entrepreneurs, and innovators, over the three-day event.

Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick, who officiated the expo, said government support for such platforms is vital as they open doors to new markets, strengthen business networks, and provide access to financing and innovation.

“Franchising is more than just a business model. It is an engine of economic growth that creates jobs, empowers small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and expands Malaysia’s footprint on the international stage,” Ewon said.

Malaysia currently has over 1,100 registered franchise brands contributing significantly to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Under the National Franchise Policy 2030, the government aims to register 4,250 local franchises and establish more than 2,000 franchise outlets abroad by the end of the decade.

Ewon added that Perbadanan Nasional Berhad (Pernas) will continue to play a strategic role in providing financing and market access, strengthening Malaysia’s franchise industry competitiveness in the region.

With aspirations to become a regional franchise hub by 2030, Malaysia is positioning itself as a gateway for international franchise businesses into Southeast Asia, in line with global economic integration and the rise of the regional entrepreneurial ecosystem.
