PENAMPANG, 6 August 2025 – In a strong show of government compassion and swift action for disaster victims, a total of 3,293 heads of households (KIR) affected by last year’s major floods in Penampang have begun receiving Bantuan Wang Ihsan (BWI) amounting to over RM3 million, spearheaded by a cross-agency initiative.

The aid distribution ceremony was held at the KDCA Hall, Penampang, officiated by Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives, Datuk Ewon Benedick, who also outlined a series of short- and long-term strategies to strengthen community disaster resilience.

“We know this financial assistance cannot replace the losses, trauma, and hardship endured by the people. But it is a clear testament that they are not alone. This aid represents the dedicated effort of many – from national leaders to civil servants working tirelessly on the ground,” Ewon said to reporters.

The disbursement is being carried out in stages over three days in collaboration with the Penampang District Council (MPPg) and relevant agencies.

Beyond immediate financial relief, the Ministry and technical agencies are taking proactive steps to enhance disaster management in flood-prone areas.

High-impact initiatives currently being implemented include:

  • Installation of early warning siren systems in several flood-prone villages, such as Kampung Kodundungan, Nambazan, Penampang Proper, Putaton, Kolopis, and Sugud.
  • Proposal to gazette 21 public buildings – including schools, churches, and community halls – as official Temporary Evacuation Centres (PPS) in high-risk areas.

“These steps are not just about issuing warnings but giving residents the time and opportunity to make safe, informed decisions when disaster strikes,” Ewon added.

To reduce long-term flood risks, Datuk Ewon emphasized the need to expedite the implementation of flood mitigation projects under Package 1 and Package 3, with additional follow-up projects already in the planning stages.

Partnerships between the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS) and MPPg are also being strengthened, with continued maintenance of rivers and drainage systems in critical areas to prevent clogging and flash floods.

“This is the kind of disaster governance we need – fast, holistic, and people-focused. I believe with the support of all stakeholders, we can build communities that are more resilient and better prepared for the future,” he stressed.

The BWI distribution ceremony marks more than just a welfare initiative – it reflects the government’s unwavering commitment to ensure no flood victim is left behind. It also signals the beginning of a comprehensive recovery and the building of a more robust disaster support system for future generations.

Datuk Ewon concluded the event with a rallying call for the people of Penampang to stay united, strengthen community preparedness, and transform past challenges into the foundation of a safer, more secure future.
