KOTA KINABALU: United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (UPKO) has officially submitted its application to join Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), in a move widely seen as reinforcing Sabah’s local political bloc ahead of a new phase in the state’s political landscape.
The formal application was presented to GRS Chairman and Sabah Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor, by UPKO President Ewon Benedick, who led the party delegation during a meeting held here today.
The move signals UPKO’s clear commitment towards consolidating cooperation among Sabah-based political parties, while strengthening political stability through a more structured and influential local alliance.
Ewon said the decision to apply for membership in GRS was unanimously endorsed during UPKO Supreme Council’s meeting on May 25, reflecting the party’s firm stance on empowering Sabah’s political voice through a dominant local coalition.
According to him, UPKO believes Sabah’s future must be driven by a stable, progressive and united local political force with a clear commitment to safeguarding the state’s rights as enshrined under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and the Federal Constitution of Malaysia.
“UPKO believes Sabah’s future must be built on the strength of united local parties that are stable, forward-looking and committed to the interests of the people and the state.
“The ‘Sabah First’ vision championed by UPKO is aligned with the Sabah Maju Jaya 2.0 roadmap pursued by GRS, and this agenda must be strengthened through closer unity for the sake of Sabah’s political stability and economic progress,” he said.
Political observers view the development as a strategic step that could further consolidate GRS as Sabah’s primary political platform, particularly in facing evolving political dynamics and preparations for the upcoming Sabah state election.
UPKO’s participation is also expected to expand the influence of local-based politics within the state government, while reinforcing the broader narrative of Sabah autonomy, inclusive development and stable governance under local leadership.
