KOTA KINABALU, Malaysia, Feb 22 — Flooding in the northern Sabah district of Kota Marudu was officially declared over at 11 a.m. Sunday after water levels fully subsided and weather conditions stabilised, local authorities said.
Kota Marudu District Officer and Disaster Management Committee chair Meirin Sugara said the declaration followed coordinated ground assessments by emergency response agencies, confirming affected homes were safe for residents to return.
All temporary evacuation centres in Kota Marudu have been closed, with agencies directed to conduct integrated post-disaster recovery assessments to support community rehabilitation.
Elsewhere in Sabah, flooding continued to affect several districts. In Pitas, the number of evacuees rose to 2,171 people from 1,078 families by noon, up from 2,120 people earlier in the day.
On Sabah’s east coast, Tawau remained unchanged with 245 evacuees from 55 families still housed in relief centres, while in Paitan, the number fell slightly to 850 people from 268 families.
Sabah’s State Disaster Management Committee secretariat said 24 evacuation centres remained operational across the three affected districts, indicating relief operations were ongoing despite improvements in parts of the state.
