KOTA BELUD, 17 July 2025 — Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives, Datuk Ewon Benedick, today officiated the launch of three new Tamu Desa (rural markets) in Kampung Takulung, Kampung Lasau, and Kampung Rosok, in a bid to strengthen rural entrepreneurship and improve community infrastructure in this district.

These three facilities are part of 22 Tamu Desa sites built or upgraded in Kota Belud under Phases 1 and 2 this year, involving a total allocation of RM4.749 million.

“Under Budget 2024, a total of 98 rural markets in Sabah and Sarawak have been completed or upgraded at a combined cost of RM19 million,” said Ewon at the launch event in Kampung Rosok.

He also announced an additional allocation of RM10 million for the construction of 46 new Tamu Desa sites across Sabah this year, continuing the implementation of earlier phases.

Entrepreneur-Friendly Spaces Serving Community Needs

Built with an open-hall concept, the Tamu Desa serves not only as a comfortable and organised trading space for local vendors but also functions as a community centre for various activities, including sports events, community gatherings, public briefings, and local meetings.

  • Tamu Takulung operates every Tuesday
  • Tamu Lasau operates every Wednesday
  • Tamu Rosok operates every Thursday

“This is not just an infrastructure project, but an investment in the economic resilience and well-being of our rural communities,” Ewon stressed.

MADANI Cooperative Sales Programme Eases Cost of Living

During his visit to Kampung Lasau Minunsud, Ewon also launched the Happy Hour MADANI Cooperative Sales Programme, offering up to 50% discounts on selected items — part of the ministry’s initiative to help citizens manage the rising cost of living and stimulate cooperative economic activity.

Ground Engagement: Supporting Local Traders, Reaching the People

Ewon also spent time observing trading activities and engaging with small vendors at all three Tamu Desa sites. He made a point to purchase local products as a gesture of support for rural entrepreneurs.

Also present at the event were the Deputy Secretary-General (Entrepreneurial Development) of KUSKOP, Datuk Saidatu Akhma Hassan, representatives from various ministry agencies, and local community leaders.
