SANDAKAN (Sabah, Malaysia), 2 September 2025 – United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (UPKO) Information Chief, Dr. Peter Naintin, has issued a stern warning that bullying in schools poses a serious threat to the future of the younger generation and must no longer be taken lightly.
“Bullying is not just a disciplinary offence but a cruel act that can strip away self-confidence, destroy academic performance, and in extreme cases, claim lives. This is why efforts to combat bullying must be implemented comprehensively with the involvement of all parties – parents, teachers, the Ministry of Education, the public, and even security agencies,” he stressed.
Dr. Peter also referred to the Zara Qarina case as a tragic example that bullying not only leaves behind deep trauma but can also take lives and shock communities worldwide. He emphasised that every bullying incident must be dealt with promptly through clear reporting procedures, firm disciplinary action, and full cooperation from all stakeholders.
At the Anti-Bullying Awareness Programme held at Astaka SM Sung Siew, Sandakan, participants were presented with five key aspects: the definition of bullying, the main forms of bullying, preventive measures, school reporting and action procedures, and the relevant legal provisions. The event also featured the signing of a “Stop Bullying” banner, an awareness video screening, the recital of an Anti-Bullying Pledge by students, and the distribution of anti-bullying posters to all lower secondary student leaders. This symbolic act delivered a clear message that the entire school community stands united against the culture of bullying.
Dr. Peter further underscored the core message that must be understood by every student, teacher, and parent: “Bullying is a crime.” He cautioned that indifference towards the issue would only expose more students to trauma, academic failure, and the destruction of their future.
He added that such awareness programmes should be expanded to schools across Sabah to ensure that every educational institution truly becomes a safe space for children to learn. A school free from bullying, he stressed, is the foundation for building human capital that is healthy, confident, and competitive.
“We cannot compromise with the culture of bullying. The future of students is the future of our nation. If we fail to protect our children today, we are in fact putting the nation’s future at risk tomorrow,” he declared firmly.
