PENAMPANG (Sabah, Malaysia), 26 Sept 2025 – In the aftermath of severe flooding that disrupted the lives of thousands in Penampang, two major secondary schools in the district were also affected, raising concerns over the continuity of students’ education.

Relief, however, came swiftly when Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek approved immediate allocations to support recovery efforts at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Limbanak and St. Michael Secondary School.

Penampang Member of Parliament Datuk Ewon Benedick expressed his gratitude for the Ministry’s quick response, describing it as a testament to the government’s concern for the well-being of its people.

“I have also requested YB Minister Fadhlina to visit SMK Limbanak to personally observe the school’s needs, in addition to reviewing the situation at St. Michael Secondary School, which has received special allocations to mitigate the impact of the disaster,” he said.

According to Ewon, SMK Limbanak has been granted funding for the maintenance and repair of its school hall, an essential facility for both students and the wider community.

He emphasized that the Ministry’s swift action not only eased the burden on the schools but also ensured that teaching and learning could continue without major disruption.

As Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives, Ewon highlighted that this initiative reflects the government’s commitment not only to rebuilding infrastructure but also to safeguarding the future of young Malaysians.

He noted that Minister Fadhlina’s working visit to both schools today demonstrated that education policy is not confined to Cabinet discussions but is also being acted upon directly on the ground, with community voices taken into account.

“As the Member of Parliament for Penampang, I truly value this prompt action. It brings relief to teachers, parents, and students who wish to see their schools restored to full function,” he added.

The local community has welcomed the announcement, with many parents expressing relief that their children will be able to continue schooling in a safer and more comfortable environment.

With this support, St. Michael and SMK Limbanak are not only being restored from flood damage but are also better positioned to serve as resilient centres of learning for the future.
